Requirements and Responsibilities For Power Substation Technician
Installs, inspects, tests, and maintains electrical equipment at power transmission substations to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of electricity across the transmission system. Performs routine and preventive maintenance on transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, relays, batteries, and associated control and protection equipment. Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions using electrical test instruments and repairs or replaces defective components to restore service. Inspects and maintains transmission line hardware, insulators, and grounding systems to identify and correct potential failures. Documents test results, maintenance activities, and equipment conditions, and adheres to all safety procedures, electrical codes, and regulatory requirements. May require an associate degree. Typically reports to a supervisor. Works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Typically requires 1-3 years of related experience.
